Teen Court Foundation of St. Clair County

What: The Teen Court Foundation of St. Clair County is a 501c3 Foundation established to provide financial support for the St. Clair County Teen Court. This support will allow Teen Court to be successful in “Saving our Future…one Teen at a Time.”

St. Clair County Teen Court Mission: Teen Court is an alternative approach to juvenile justice that holds the first time youth offender accountable through a restorative justice remedy imposed by their peers. The St. Clair County Teen Court emphasizes accountability and responsibility rather than traditional punitive measures, and upon successful completion of the sentence/remedy, the charge is not filed and the teen maintains a clean record.

Outcomes: After five years of Teen Court, 200 teens completed all requirements and graduated by December 2020. The recidivism rate for graduates is less than 10%. Peer jurors are from 14 out of 16 high schools in St. Clair County. They benefit from the peer juror experience, learning leadership skills while serving.

Why: The Teen Court Foundation was created to ensure that Teen Court can continue to provide a much needed and successful resource for non-violent teen offenders. The St. Clair County Teen Court was funded by the Juvenile Justice Council of the State of Illinois with pass-through federal funds from July 2014 through June 2017. As of July 2017, those federal funds were not awarded to any Teen Court in Illinois. Contributions from generous individuals, businesses and community organizations since July 2017 ensured that Teen Court has continued to serve the needs of youthful offenders.

How to Help: The cost for a teen offender to enter Teen Court and successfully graduate is $375. This expense includes a referral from the State’s Attorney office, interviews with a parent and teen, appearance in Teen Court, oversight of the restorative justice remedy and successful graduation. Make a contribution today that will have a positive impact on the life of a young offender, the teen jurors, and our community.
